General Motors announced that GMC Terrain sales are continuing at a rapid pace as it enters its second model year. GM said that in the first seven months of 2010, the Terrain has consistently taken a speedy 13 days to turn on dealer lots. The rest of the compact SUV segment usually takes 28 days and  51 days for all vehicles.

“We’ve had an outstanding response to the Terrain since it launched last Fall,” said Lisa Hutchinson, GMC Product Marketing Director. “The Terrain is attracting new buyers to the brand who are looking for an SUV that offers fuel economy, exterior and interior styling, quality and safety that maintain GMC’s reputation for engineering excellence.”

GM also said that the Terrain appeals to women more than any other GMC product, which is pretty obvious since GMC is not really known for making female oriented vehicles. Approximately 46 percent of buyers of the Terrain are women, which is more than 20 percentage points higher than the overall brand.

The GMC Terrain earned a segment-level award in the J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study. The score for U.S. auto brands as a group averages 787 on a 1,000-point scale, compared with 774 for import brands with headquarters in Europe and Asia.

The APEAL study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive, based on owner evaluations of more than 80 vehicle attributes. The 2010 APEAL study is based on responses gathered between February and May 2010 from more than 76,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2010 model-year cars and trucks who were surveyed after the first 90 days of ownership.

Historically, vehicle models achieving high APEAL scores have been shown to generate faster sales, higher profit margins, and less need for cash incentives. High levels of vehicle appeal also have a strong influence on customer recommendation rates. Among the most highly satisfied owners (APEAL scores averaging 950 or higher), 97 percent say they “definitely will” recommend their vehicle.

The 2010 GMC Terrain received the highest possible rollover protection rating of “Good” in the first Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rollover tests of midsize SUVs and crossovers, one of four tests leading to the Terrain receiving the Institute’s Top Safety Pick award.

The IIHS’s roof strength test pushes a metal plate against one corner of a roof at aconstant speed, before five inches of roof crush is reached. To receive its “Good” rating the subject vehicle must withstand a force equal to four times its weight.

“The Top Safety award recognizes vehicles that are on the top rung forsafety,”said IIHS president Adrian Lund.  “The Terrain is in an elite group of vehicles that have achieved the highest ratings for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control to help drivers avoid serious crashes.”

The 2010 Terrain offers standard four-wheel disc brakes, traction control and StabiliTrak electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. The 2010 GMC Terrain offers six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags, head curtain side air bags and seat-mounted side air bags.

The standard engine in Sierra HD trucks is the Vortec 6.0L small-block V-8, which is enhanced for 2011 with greater idle refinement. It is rated at 360 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. at 4,200 rpm in Sierra Denali HD, 2500HD and 3500HD pickup models. In chassis cab and box-delete models, as well as pickups with a GVWR greater than 10,000 pounds, it is rated at 322 horsepower (240 kW) at 4,400 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. at 4,200 rpm.

Approximately 90 percent of the Vortec 6.0L’s peak torque is available by only 2,000 rpm and excellent fuel economy is enabled by the engine’s low-friction OHV configuration and cam phasing, according to the Texas GMC team. The state-of-the-art small-block architecture of the Vortec 6.0L – known commonly as the “LS” family – delivers great strength, smoothness and durability.
